This post is a Q and A with Dr. Gail Nunlee-Bland, an endocrinologist specializing in diabetes care who uses health information technology (health IT) to help improve her patients’ diabetes management. Dr. Nunlee-Bland adopted an electronic health record (EHR) that was focused on diabetes and later implemented a personal health record (PHR) to work with the EHR.
Implementing a PHR system helped Dr. Nunlee-Bland improve the quality of care for her patients with diabetes by:
- Providing an organized and easily accessible record system
- Allowing key information to flow from provider to patients
- Improving care coordination in emergency situations
- Providing diabetes self-management resources through a disease management portal
Dr. Nunlee-Bland appreciates the value of PHRs, which allow her to empower her patients to be in control of their diabetes management.
